Jones Walker offers law students a unique and exciting summer associate program that offers both invaluable experience and the possibility of future employment as a regular, partnership-track associate. We make every effort to ensure our summer associates are exposed to the practice groups they are most interested in, and that summer associates have the opportunity to work within different transactional and litigation practice groups.
Generally, our summer associate program is available to second-year law students in our New Orleans and Baton Rouge offices, although limited opportunities for first-year law students may be available in some offices from time to time. We encourage students who are interested in our dynamic summer program to get to know us through our recruiting materials, including our recruiting brochure, and at our on-campus interview events.
Our summer associates typically spend time researching, analyzing legal issues, and drafting transactional documents and pleadings, but are strongly encouraged to become more deeply involved in cases and other work. Summer associates observe practice situations and participate in various non-research and writing activities, including accompanying attorneys to depositions, trials, mediations, closings, drafting sessions, and work site and vessel inspections. Jones Walker's summer associates work hand-in-hand with our full-time associates and partners to gain exposure to and knowledge of day-to-day legal practice.
Each summer associate is paired with an associate advisor and a partner mentor during his or her clerkship. These attorneys help integrate summer associates into firm life and provide feedback on assignments, answer any questions about particular projects, office policy, and other matters.
Our summer program isn't entirely focused on work. Social activities occur throughout the summer, which allow students and attorneys to meet and relax outside work. These activities include everything from weekly lunches with partners to canoe trips on the weekends. We want our summer associates to become fully acquainted with our attorneys and get a realistic view of life as an associate at the firm.
