Hamilton Quoted in the Birmingham Business Journal and the Mobile Press-Register
September 13, 2010

PalmerPalmer C. Hamilton was quoted in the Birmingham Business Journal in an article entitled "Gulf Coast Lawmakers Urge Feds to Ease Regulations to Help Banks." In the article, Mr. Hamilton, a partner in the firm's Government Relations Practice Group, discussed the contents of a letter that was sent to federal banking chair Ben Bernanke and FDIC chair Sheila Blair by eleven members of Congress. The letter asked for suspension of certain bank regulations due to the affect that the recent oil spill might have on properties, similar to that done for banks in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, which allowed banks not to reassess the values of properties affected by the storm. Mr. Hamilton pointed out how the real estate market and surrounding businesses could feel the pinch if banking regulators push for reappraisal of affected properties. "In this particular environment, (the regulation) does not help; it causes considerable harm. It makes sense to give banks some kind of respite." To read the full article, click here.

Mr. Hamilton was also quoted in an editorial piece in the September 9, 2010, edition of the Mobile-Press Register. The article discussed the challenges facing Gulf Coast banks as a result of the BP oil spill. Mr. Hamilton urged Congress to give coastal banks "some breathing room" with regards to new appraisals for properties that secure loans.
