Waters Receives 2013 Bailey Thompson Award

WatersMichael D. Waters, a partner in the firm's Banking & Financial Services Practice Group in the Birmingham office, was recently honored by the Alabama Citizens for Constitutional Reform as a recipient of the 2013 Bailey Thompson Award for his service on the Alabama Constitutional Revision Commission. This award named after Bailey Thompson, who as a newspaper reporter and then faculty member of the University of Alabama, advocated revisions to Alabama's state constitution. Established in 2007, the award celebrates the spirit of public service. The sixth annual awards ceremony was held on August 15, 2013, at the Wynfrey Hotel in Birmingham, Alabama.

Established in 2011, the Revision Commission is composed of 18 members and is chaired by former Governor Albert Brewer. The Revision Commission has worked on revisions to the Alabama Constitution of 1901, which are submitted to the state legislature and, if passed, voted on by the public. Mr. Waters has served as an adviser to the Revision Commission and has been involved in a number of constitutional revision efforts over the past 30 years. In 1979, he served as legal advisor to Governor Fob James and headed Governor James's efforts to revise the Alabama Constitution. In 2003, he served as a member of Governor Bob Riley's Alabama Citizens' Constitutional Commission.

Mr. Waters is a native of Cullman, Alabama, and a member of the firm’s Board of Directors. He practices in the areas of corporate securities and banking.
