September 15, 2003

On September 12, government relations special counsel, Chuck McMains, served on the Law & Business panel at the fall meeting of the Business Advisory Council of the University of Virginia School of Law. The Law & Business program included an extended discussion on tort reform. Mr. McMains authored most of Louisiana's tort reform legislation (1992-2002) most of which was during his last six years of three consecutive terms in the Louisiana House of Representatives, where he served as chairman of the Civil Law & Procedure Committee. During his tenure, Mr. McMains authored significant tort reform legislation, including the repeal of punitive damages and strict liability; the repeal of joint and several liability; wholesale revision of the articles on class actions and summary judgment; and reinstitution of the "business judgment" rule in actions against officers and directors.
