Michael has practiced primarily in the areas of maritime, oilfield, insurance, and product liability litigation since 1982. He has extensive practice and trial experience in state and federal courts in Louisiana and Texas. Michael routinely represents clients in multi-party complex litigation involving personal injury and property damage related to oil and gas production and exploration activity on land, sea, and structures on the outer continental shelf, explosions, allisions, contractual and insurance disputes, construction defects, products liability, and general commercial liability matters. Michael has considerable experience with state and federal appellate litigation. His successful cases are reported extensively in Lexis and Westlaw.
Michael has served as lead trial lawyer for Weatherford International, Inc., in connection with all civil litigation and investigations concerning BP's Macondo well blowout and explosion in the Gulf of Mexico, the largest oil spill in American history, including the multidistrict litigation before the US District Court for the Eastern District of New Orleans, Louisiana, In Re: Oil Spill by the Oil Rig Deepwater Horizon in the Gulf of Mexico, on April 20, 2010, MDL No. 2179 (MDL). In the mid-1990s, Michael served as state-wide coverage counsel in Louisiana for The Aetna Casualty and Surety Company, where he provided commercial liability policy coverage opinions. Michael also has extensive experience and success in subrogation litigation on behalf of insurance companies, as well as bad faith litigation. Michael speaks at and conducts client and continuing education seminars on a variety of topics.
Reflecting the standard of long-term excellence established in his legal practice, Michael was named to the BTI Client Service All-Stars, a group of 330 individual attorneys nationwide identified solely through client feedback and acknowledged by in-house counsel of large companies as delivering the highest levels of client service. No attorney can lobby to be added to the list, self-submit nominations, or provide corporate counsel names to be interviewed. The only way to become a BTI Client Service All-Star is for corporate counsel to single out an attorney for exceptional service and performance.
