Michael Leachman is an associate in the Intellectual Property practice area within the Business & Commercial Litigation Practice Group. He is a Registered Patent Attorney and practices from the firm's Baton Rouge office. Mr. Leachman practices in all areas of intellectual property law.

Mr. Leachman's patent practice focuses on helping clients accomplish their business objectives from the conception of a new invention to its commercialization. He has facilitated the acquisition and enforcement of patent assets in numerous countries throughout the world. Mr. Leachman is experienced in handling all aspects surrounding the prosecution of both domestic and foreign patents in the mechanical, chemical, biomedical, bioscience, and nanotechnology fields. Mr. Leachman's patent prosecution practice includes analyzing the patentability of new technology; preparing, filing, and prosecuting both domestic and foreign patent applications; and managing patent portfolios. Mr. Leachman's patent transactions practice includes the preparation of patent licenses and assignments, patent infringement opinions, validity opinions, freedom-to-operate opinions, confidentiality agreements, and employment and consulting contracts. Mr. Leachman is also an experienced patent litigator, and has represented both patent holders and accused infringers in federal jurisdictions across the country.

Mr. Leachman's trademark practice focuses on helping clients acquire, protect, and enforce both domestic and foreign trademarks. He provides counseling and representation extending to all facets of trademark law. Mr. Leachman's practice includes counseling clients in their selection of trademarks; providing trademark availability and registerability opinions; preparing, filing, and prosecuting trademark applications in the U.S. and abroad; and policing potentially infringing uses of clients' marks. Mr. Leachman also has experience handling trademark, trade secret, and unfair competition litigation in both federal and state courts. In addition, he has represented clients in trademark matters before the United States Patent and Trademark Office's Trademark Trial and Appeal Board.

Mr. Leachman's copyright practice involves all aspects of copyright protection, licensing, and enforcement. Mr. Leachman is experienced in obtaining copyright registrations; advising clients regarding ownership disputes; and preparing and negotiating licensing agreements, assignments, and employment contracts. He also has experience preparing and negotiating software-related agreements, such as software development agreements, software licenses, and software maintenance and support contracts on behalf of both licensors and licensees. He has litigated copyright issues on behalf of copyright owners and accused infringers in federal court.

Mr. Leachman is a 2005 graduate of the Paul M. Hebert Law Center, Louisiana State University, where he received his juris doctor degree and Bachelor in Civil Law, and was a Senior Editor of the Louisiana Law Review. He received his Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering, with honors, from Louisiana Tech University in 2002.
