Ed Ashton is a special counsel in the firm's Banking & Financial Services Practice Group and practices from the firm's Birmingham office. Mr. Ashton started the internal law department at AmSouth Bank (now Regions Bank), focusing primarily on commercial lending, real estate lending, workouts, and regulatory matters.
In 1993, Mr. Ashton left AmSouth to join the predecessor of Jones Walker's Birmingham office where he has represented financial institutions in commercial and real estate lending and sale-leaseback transactions. In addition, he has respresented secured and unsecured creditors and landlords in out-of-court workouts and receivership and bankruptcy proceedings. He has also advised banks and other financial institutions on matters relating to the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC), deposit products, letters of credit, commercial and consumer lending, and federal and state regulations.
In addition to his work with financial institutions, Mr. Ashton also enjoys an extensive real estate practice, in which he represents purchasers and sellers of real property; real estate developers of office, retail, multi-family and single-family developments; and both owners and tenants in leasing transactions. He has advised clients with regard to zoning, subdivision, and other land use issues involving residential, commercial, and industrial properties.
