William M. Backstrom, Jr., a partner in the firm's Tax & Estates Practice Group in the New Orleans Office, was quoted in the Law360 article, “Resurgence Of Tax On Receipts May Hurt State Economies.” The article discusses the multiple layers of gross receipts taxes and how they can ultimately be passed on to the consumer and, as Mr. Backstrom points out, unlike a sales tax on the final purchase of a product, it would not appear on customers’ invoices and receipts. He says, “It’s a pyramid, it’s hidden in the price and it’s obviously not transparent to buyers. Unless you have a very broad base and a very low rate, it becomes a completely unfair tax.”
