Cunningham Discusses the Impact of Dwindling Funds for Public Defenders in Louisiana

Mark A. Cunningham, the current Louisiana State Bar Association President and a partner in the firm's Corporate Compliance & White Collar Defense Team in the New Orleans office, was recently quoted in the article, "Public Defenders Offices Remain Strapped for Cash," published by The Shreveport Times. In the article, Mr. Cunningham discusses how the practice of appointing private attorneys to take on criminal cases is a threat to the public and the judicial system. Mr. Cunningham also served as a panelist at the Forum on Indigent Defense at the LSU campus in Shreveport, Louisiana, on April 20, 2016, where he discussed how dwindling funding for public defenders impacts the local judicial system, how it affects indigent defendants' constitutional right to legal representation under the 6th Amendment, and what can be done to stabilize funding.
