Grady Hurley, co-chair of the maritime litigation, arbitration & dispute resolution team, served as a quarter final judge during the annual John R Brown Moot Court Competition on March 26, 2021, sponsored by The University of Texas and the Maritime Law Association of the United States and hosted by Tulane University. Each year, the competition focuses on admiralty-related issues, and participating students present briefs and arguments before the US Supreme Court. This year, the issues included domestic discovery involving an international arbitration under 28 USC 1782 and whether an incident involving offshore drilling in State waters using a jack up rig was maritime commerce. Coincidentally, the US Supreme Court accepted writs in Servotronics Inc v. Rolls Royce Plc (7th Circuit) the week that the competition began to resolve the split in appellate circuits on conducting discovery through domestic courts under 28 USC 1782 while an arbitration was proceeding before a foreign tribunal.
