MIAMI, August 4, 2015 – Jones Walker LLP announced today that Jon May and Barry Turner have joined the Miami, Florida, office as special counsel in the firm's Business & Commercial Litigation Practice Group. Mr. May joins the firm's Corporate Compliance & White Collar Defense team and Mr. Turner joins the Banking and Creditors Rights team.

Mr. May defends individuals and institutions accused of serious violations of federal law, including the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, healthcare fraud, securities fraud, money laundering, mail and telemarketing fraud, mortgage fraud, racketeering, and violations of the Endangered Species Act and the Lacey Act. He has tried cases before federal district courts throughout the United States and has represented individuals in appeals before various federal Circuit Courts of Appeals. 

 

He has previously served as the Chair of the White Collar Crime Section of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and is a past Co-Chair of the Defense Function Services Committee of the Criminal Justice Section of the American Bar Association. 

 

In his early career, Mr. May served as a federal prosecutor in Miami for four years before founding his own criminal defense firm in Miami, Florida, where he practiced for nearly 30 years. He received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Florida and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Emory University. He is a member of the Florida Bar and is admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals, and the Southern, Middle, and Northern District Courts of Florida.

 

Mr. Turner has experience litigating all aspects of bankruptcy cases including administration of Chapter 7, 11, and 13 bankruptcy estates on behalf of interested parties, landlords, trustees, unsecured creditors and secured creditors. He has litigated, prosecuted and defended proceedings brought in state, federal, and bankruptcy court for causes of action including residential and commercial foreclosure, fraudulent transfer, preferential transfer, post-petition transfers, breach of contract, assignments for the benefit of creditors, Florida Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act, Lanham Act, Telephone Consumer Protection Act, valuation, breach of fiduciary duty, negligence, insurance malpractice, and attorney malpractice. 

 

Mr. Turner was a temporary law clerk to the Honorable Robert A. Mark in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Florida, Miami Division from 2010 to 2011. During law school, he was a summer intern for the Honorable Laurel M. Isicoff, in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Florida, Miami Division. 

 

He received his Juris Doctor degree from Florida International University School of Law and his Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Mr. Turner is a member of the Florida Bar and the District of Columbia Bar. He is admitted to practice before the Southern, Middle, and Northern District Courts of Florida and the US Bankruptcy Courts in the Southern and Northern Districts of Florida.
