Jim Wright, a partner in the Maritime Practice Group, presented at the Associated Branch Pilots’ “Turning Obstacles into Opportunities Through Proactive Relationships” Maritime Industry Seminar June 17–20 in Lake Oconee, Georgia. His presentation “Legislative Statutes Governing Bar Pilots” focused on the history of Louisiana pilotage on the Mississippi River dating back to the 1700’s. Jim discussed the delegation of pilotage regulation to the states by the First Congress in 1789, reviewed the development of Louisiana pilotage laws dating back to the Louisiana Purchase, and discussed current Louisiana pilotage laws. Bar pilots and maritime industry stakeholders, including tanker owners, liquified natural gas shippers, petroleum shippers, grain and soybean shippers, commodity trade associations, shipping agents, maritime freight forwarders, and government relations representatives attended the seminar.
