The client entered the US in 2018, at the age of 12, as an unaccompanied minor and has been seeking SIJS, along with other immigration relief options. The firm helped the minor file a state-court petition seeking a ruling that it was not in the child's best interest to return to their home country before the child could apply for SIJS. After obtaining a favorable state court order on the minor’s behalf, the firm filed the SIJS petition, which US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) approved. As soon as the minor became eligible to apply for lawful permanent resident status and obtain their green card, the firm, with Salomé’s assistance, filed an adjustment of status application, which was subject to significant adjudication delays. To provide the client with an additional pathway to citizenship, the client applied for asylum status in the US, as they met many of the criteria. Salomé prepped the client for their asylum interview with USCIS; however, USCIS found no basis for asylum,  referred the case to immigration court, and placed the client in removal proceedings. Salomé filed a motion to dismiss the proceedings because the client was seeking additional immigration relief, and the judge ruled to dismiss the case while the client awaited adjudication of their adjustment of status application that was based on their SIJS petition. When the interview was scheduled for May 4, 2026, Salomé prepped and represented the client before USCIS throughout the interview process. Following the interview, the client received approval of their adjustment of status application and green card.
