"The Offshore Renewable Industry Status Report: Navigating Worker and Vessel Classifications," Benedict's Maritime Bulletin

By Grady S. Hurley

Article

December 2024 Issue

Grady Hurley, a partner in the Maritime Practice Group, co-leader of the maritime litigation, arbitration, and dispute resolution team, and co-chair of the Energy, Environmental & Natural Resources Industry Team, authored an article for Benedict's Maritime Bulletin, published December 2024. Grady's article "The Offshore Renewable Industry Status Report: Navigating Worker and Vessel Classifications" discusses the complex state, federal, and maritime legal issues of offshore energy operations occurring within state waters and on the Outer Continental Shelf involving vessels and production platforms. He highlights the recent US Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals Palfinger Marine USA vs Shell Oil decision as a prime example of the unique nature of offshore energy operations, where situs and status are examined to determine both jurisdiction and applicable law.
