Alex Cochran is special counsel in the Litigation Practice Group and a member of the Energy, Environmental & Natural Resources Industry Team. He represents clients in commercial, environmental, and catastrophic-incident litigation.
Alex handles disputes across the oil and gas industry, including matters involving onshore and offshore drilling, chemical releases, toxic spills, and workplace accidents, as well as the commercial and insurance-coverage litigation that often follows such events. In this capacity, he represents privately held and publicly traded vendors, contractors, service providers, and other companies that supply goods and services to major refineries and petrochemical facilities. Alex also handles commercial, products liability, real estate, and other disputes for businesses operating in the construction, technology, manufacturing, and related industries.
Alex’s approach to dispute prevention and resolution is deliberately “old school,” built on personal relationships and deep knowledge of his clients’ businesses and industries. Drawing on his earlier experience in a growth-focused industry, he provides strategic advice that helps clients understand and determine the likely outcomes of various dispute resolution strategies — including settlement negotiations, arbitration, and trials — and their impact on clients’ long-term objectives and relationships with business partners. Recognizing that a win-at-all-costs posture can, with certain exceptions, deliver little more than high costs, Alex helps clients explore the full range of their legal options.
This focus on client partnerships also informs his approach to pre-litigation counseling. He routinely advises clients on accidents, operational incidents, and commercial conflicts, helping minimize potential exposure before they harden into lawsuits.
Among his representative matters prior to joining Jones Walker, Alex defended an oilfield services provider in a $1 billion class action arising from refinery chemical releases; served as lead counsel and directed a five-person discovery team on behalf of a technology company in mass tort, multidistrict litigation involving thousands of plaintiffs; and represented a contractor in a multiparty insurance coverage dispute. He serves as an at-large board member of the Houston Bar Association’s Environmental Law Section.
