Jake Barnes is an associate in the Litigation Practice Group, where he represents businesses and individuals in complex civil litigation across state and federal courts in Florida and Alabama.
Jake maintains a broad civil litigation practice spanning commercial disputes of all types, including corporate and contract matters, products liability, employment, real estate, maritime, construction, and bankruptcy. In addition to trial court work, he advises clients and co-counsel on strategy and briefing before appellate courts. Jake’s experience in both district courts and the US Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit gives him a practical understanding of the full litigation arc — from early case strategy through trial and, if necessary, appeal.
Jake brings a distinctive depth of federal judicial experience to his practice. Before joining the firm, he completed two federal clerkships: two years with Judge M. Casey Rodgers of the US District Court for the Northern District of Florida and one year with Judge Robert J. Luck of the Eleventh Circuit. Those clerkships provided firsthand insight into how federal judges approach dispositive motions, evidentiary issues, and appellate review — a perspective Jake applies directly to client strategy.
Between his clerkships, Jake practiced as an associate in the Mobile, Alabama office of an Am Law 200 firm representing businesses in high-stakes civil litigation. During law school, he served as executive article selection editor for both the Florida State University Law Review and the Florida State University Business Law Review, externed for two federal judges in the Northern District of Florida, and worked in the Antitrust Division of the Office of the Florida Attorney General.
