Brehm

Position
Partner
Office
Minneapolis

Kyle Brehm is a partner in the Tax Practice Group, where he advises clients on state and local tax matters and provides comprehensive counsel on multistate indirect tax issues.

Kyle is a state and local tax attorney with nearly two decades of experience providing strategic value to clients across a broad range of industries. He draws on his extensive background at a Big Four accounting firm and in private legal practice to deliver sophisticated counsel on the full spectrum of state and local tax matters, from compliance and planning to dispute resolution and transactional support. Kyle has particular experience in multistate indirect tax issues, including complex post-Wayfair sales and use tax matters.

Kyle represents clients in connection with state tax compliance strategies, audit defense, and dispute resolution. With an emphasis on building close, long-lasting working relationships, he works with executives and in-house tax and legal departments to identify tax savings and leverage opportunities related to existing, revised, and proposed state and federal legislation and administrative rulings. Among other matters, Kyle conducts nexus reviews and taxability research, prepares legal opinions, helps automate compliance processes through innovative technology solutions, assists clients with state and local tax refund opportunities and defends clients facing state tax audits. He also provides strategic counsel on the state and local tax implications of a wide range of business transactions, including entity restructuring, mergers, and acquisitions and conducts related due diligence.

Kyle is committed to helping clients mitigate risk in the indirect tax space through the negotiation of voluntary disclosure agreements and the development of enhanced compliance processes. He develops and delivers targeted training sessions and evaluates existing processes to recommend and design process improvements that utilize innovative technology. His approach combines extensive legal experience with practical business solutions, enabling clients to achieve increasingly accurate state and local sales tax compliance while minimizing exposure and administrative burdens.

Before entering private practice, Kyle gained valuable experience in the tax consulting practice of a Big Four accounting firm, where he developed deep insights into the intersection of tax compliance, dispute resolution, and transactional planning. This background enables him to approach complex state and local tax issues with both technical precision and practical business acumen, helping clients navigate the evolving landscape of multistate tax obligations.

Kyle is a recognized thought leader in the state and local tax community and frequently serves as a speaker for professional organizations on topics related to indirect tax and relevant technology. He has held leadership positions with the Institute for Professionals in Taxation, including serving as conference chair for the national Sales Tax Symposium and as a committee member for various educational programs and conferences.
