Matthew Slaughter is a partner in the Litigation Practice Group and a member of the commercial disputes team.
Matt is a commercial litigator who represents regional and national businesses, from startups and emerging companies to large corporations and high-net-worth individuals. Licensed in Louisiana and Alabama, he serves as outside counsel to clients on a wide range of business issues, including contract disputes, employment matters, intellectual property, data privacy, regulatory compliance, and corporate transactions.
Matt's litigation practice focuses on trade secret and other business disputes involving intellectual property, restrictive covenants, trademark infringement, unfair competition, breach of fiduciary duty, and shareholder and partnership claims. He also handles construction and insurance coverage litigation. He regularly seeks and opposes injunctive relief in state and federal courts, has tried cases to judgment, and represents clients on appeal.
As outside general counsel to numerous businesses, Matt advises clients on legal issues across their organizations and works closely with Jones Walker attorneys in other practice areas when specialized guidance is needed. His experience as both litigation counsel and outside general counsel allows him to provide practical advice that aligns legal strategy with business objectives.
In the healthcare industry, Matt represents specialty pharmacies and other healthcare providers nationwide in matters involving payors and pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs), including network participation, reimbursement, audits, recoupment, and any-willing-provider claims. He also advises healthcare clients on regulatory and transactional matters. In addition, he counsels businesses on emerging technology issues, including data privacy and the regulatory framework governing unmanned aircraft systems in Louisiana.
Before entering private practice, Matt served as a law clerk to Magistrate Judge Karen L. Hayes and Judge Robert G. James of the US District Court for the Western District of Louisiana.
Matt maintains an active pro bono practice, including representing petitioners in federal court under the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction. He also serves on the board of directors and executive committee of the Pro Bono Project.
