Four Jones Walker partners served on the New Orleans Bar Association (NOBA) Study Group Delegation that traveled to Panamá City, Panamá, from October 5 to 8, 2017, to explore economic development opportunities, host continuing legal education courses on conducting business in Latin America, and meet with commercial leaders and government officials. The four-day program also included courses on cyber-risk management for multinational companies, employment-based immigration policies in the United States and Panamá, and comparative maritime law. 

The Jones Walker team included the following attorneys:

• Mark A. Cunningham, a partner with the Corporate Compliance and White Collar Defense Team, served as Chair of the NOBA Study Group Committee and led the Delegation. 

• Michael W. Magner, a partner on the Corporate Compliance & White Collar Defense team, presented “Money Laundering, Whistleblowers, Dawn Raids and the Panama Papers,” which explored how enforcers in the United States are combating money laundering, identifying strategies for investigating whistleblower complaints, and responding to dawn raids by law enforcement.   

• Marc C. Hebert, a partner in the Business & Commercial Litigation Practice Group, presented “The Current Landscape in U.S. Trade Policy and Its Effect on Business Investment,” which explored current and future trade opportunities in Panamá and Central America.

• Luis A. Leitzelar, a partner in the Business & Commercial Litigation Practice Group, presented “Fundamentals of Comparative Legal Ethics: The United States, Latin America, and Beyond,” which explored key differences in the rules affecting attorney-client privileges, conflict of law questions, legal fees, and professional liability exposure.
