J. Frederick
Emert

Position
Special Counsel
Office
Washington, DC

Jason Emert is special counsel in the Litigation Practice Group and a member of the corporate compliance and white collar defense team. He concentrates his practice on international litigation and arbitration, economic sanctions, national security, foreign relations, election law, and government relations.

Jason has spent his career working with world leaders, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), militaries, and multinational organizations. He has served as a geopolitical advisor, a political consultant, an adjunct professor, and a reserve military officer. Jason is highly regarded for his knowledge of and experience in handling complex, high-profile issues, including US sanctions, international business and trade disputes, and foreign relations law.

Drawing on his extensive, global network of senior business executives, government officials, and other leading consultants and entities, Jason helps US and non-US clients resolve complicated legal issues, with an emphasis on investor-state arbitrations. Among other dispute-resolution forums, he has represented and advised numerous global clients facing the Permanent Court of Arbitration, the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Court of International Arbitration, and the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID).

In addition to his work in private practice, Jason is a reserve officer in the US Air Force, where he serves as the deputy staff judge advocate for the 134th Air Refueling Wing in the Tennessee Air National Guard. He  is also a member of the Military & Veterans Affairs Committee of the Florida Bar.

On the international stage, Jason has served as a legal specialist for the American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative in Bosnia; as an arbitrator for the American Chamber of Commerce in Kosovo’s Arbitration Center; and as chair of the International Law Committee of the American Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division. He  is a listed expert on Southeastern/Eastern Europe with the Atlantic Council and appears often as a political commentator in domestic and international media. Well versed in domestic and international election law, Jason has served on multiple election-observation teams across Europe, Latin America, and Africa.

On the domestic front, he is former chairman of the Young Republican National Federation (YRNF); during his tenure, Jason led the organization through a time of unprecedented growth and development. Before leading the YRNF, he chaired the largest global conservative and center-right youth organization, the International Young Democracy Union (IYDU), a division of the International Democracy Union (IDU). The IYDU’s membership comprised 80-plus political organizations from more than 60 countries. Previously, Jason worked for US Senator Lamar Alexander (R-TN).

Since the beginning of his career, he has been recognized by regional, national, and international organizations for his strong leadership and commitment to public service. Accolades Jason has received include, among others, being named a “Future Leader in Foreign Policy” by the Foreign Policy Initiative; awarded a Warsaw Security Forum New Security Leader fellowship; and selected for two prestigious American Council of Young Political Leaders international exchange programs to Russia and Mexico.

Part of a family with a long history of success in college athletics, Jason was a starting punter for the Salukis of Southern Illinois University, where he was a member of three Gateway Conference Championship teams and four NCAA Division I-AA playoff teams during his career playing under legendary coach Jerry Kill.
