Louisiana Goes Nuclear: Four Things to Know About the State's New Energy Strategy

By Alex P. Prochaska, Shawn J. Daray, Stephen M. Capella
April 16, 2026

On March 23, 2025, the State of Louisiana announced two major nuclear energy initiatives at CERAWeek: the release of the Louisiana Nuclear Strategic Framework and the renewal of $45 million in federal funding for the Future Use of Energy in Louisiana, or FUEL, initiative. Here are four things to know.

  1. Louisiana has adopted a formal nuclear energy roadmap.
The Louisiana Nuclear Strategic Framework establishes a statewide plan to expand nuclear energy development, strengthen domestic supply chains, and support high wage job growth in response to rising energy demand and the need for lower or carbon free power.
  2. The Framework focuses on three priority areas of the nuclear value chain.
The State is targeting nuclear component manufacturing, nuclear power generation, and uranium fuel conversion and enrichment, supported by incentives, workforce development, regulatory coordination, site development, and public education.
  3. Louisiana secured $45 million in renewed federal funding for FUEL.
The National Science Foundation renewed $45 million for the Future Use of Energy in Louisiana initiative, building on $15 million in prior awards to support use inspired research, technology commercialization, and workforce development over the next three years.
  4. These initiatives build on Louisiana’s existing energy and infrastructure strengths.
Together, the Framework and FUEL leverage Louisiana’s transportation infrastructure, skilled workforce, established energy regulatory programs, and existing nuclear generation footprint, positioning the State to attract future nuclear investment and federal tax incentives.

The Louisiana Nuclear Strategic Framework combined with FUEL and federal production and investment tax credit incentives for existing and new nuclear power plants point to a positive landscape for nuclear energy development in Louisiana.

This is not just an energy strategy—it is an economic strategy that will create high-wage jobs, strengthen our industrial base, and secure Louisiana’s role as a global energy leader. - Governor Jeff Landry
