Chris Cazenave is a partner on the Construction Team, where he focuses on high-stakes construction litigation and arbitration for clients in the energy, industrial, and commercial sectors.
Chris is a seasoned construction litigator who represents owners, general contractors, subcontractors, developers, lenders, and other stakeholders in complex, high-value disputes involving major projects throughout the United States. He advises clients on all facets of construction-related disputes, from early dispute avoidance and pre-litigation counseling through settlement negotiations, mediation, arbitration, and trial. Chris’ goals are as straightforward as those of his clients: to keep their projects on track and protect their investments in multimillion- and multibillion-dollar developments.
Chris has particular depth in energy and industrial construction, including oil and gas projects, liquefied natural gas facilities, petrochemical plants, and other large-scale energy infrastructure. He also regularly represents clients in matters involving commercial developments, entertainment venues, mixed-use projects, and other significant undertakings. His practice encompasses a wide range of construction issues, including delay and acceleration claims, schedule and critical path analyses, cost overruns, defective work allegations, contract interpretation, mechanic’s liens, payment disputes, bond claims, and professional liability matters.
Over the course of his career, Chris has prosecuted and defended claims involving hundreds of millions of dollars in disputes argued in federal and state courts, as well as in arbitrations administered by the American Arbitration Association and the International Chamber of Commerce. He has obtained significant recoveries for clients through arbitration awards and jury verdicts and has successfully defended clients against substantial claims in complex multiparty litigation and arbitration proceedings. Fully prepared to take matters to trial when necessary, Chris also works strategically with clients to evaluate all possible paths to resolution and determine the most effective approach for each dispute.
Chris draws on a network of skilled experts and consultants to build efficient, effective teams tailored to each matter’s unique requirements. He collaborates closely with clients’ in-house counsel and project teams, as well as with technical and scientific experts in fields such as scheduling, engineering, and cost analysis, to develop comprehensive strategies that address the legal and practical dimensions of construction disputes. His approach emphasizes clear communication, proactive risk management, and a deep understanding of the business considerations that drive decision-making in the construction industry.
Chris is active in the American Bar Association Forum on Construction Law, speaks frequently at industry conferences, and is the author of numerous papers on construction litigation issues. His involvement in professional organizations and industry groups keeps him at the forefront of developments in construction law and enables him to provide clients with informed, practical counsel on emerging trends and best practices in dispute resolution.
